well I dont know if any of you are interested but UBISOFT has announced there new form of DRM on all future games. This DRM will require you to go online to start your game and remain online the whole time you play, if the internet goes down you cant play, if the internet goes down for a second itll kick you back to the main menu and you hope to god you saved your game or youll have to do it all over again and Save games will also be stored remotely on Ubisoft servers(well I hope they wont loose mine when Im 40 hours into a game  ). Now im one for trying to stop Pirates but when the legit buyers are getting screwed like this its Bullcrap.
here are some links to sites in regards to this including a cool one at youtube that shows whats going to happen
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/02/17/you-maniacs/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkTZTzsYoZs
so lets boycott all UBISOFT games till they realize this form of DRM is WRONG.

I am no fan of pirates either, but this is F@#$ING RIDICULOUS!!!

What if someone cant afford internet, or has Dial-Up? This is no way to go about DRM at all. I mean yes, they are trying to protect their software, but not like this.

I am sure that Assassin's Creed II will have this awful feature. I am glad I bought it for Xbox 360 in the first place. Ubisoft is digging themselves a hole so deep, they are not going to be able to crawl back out.

Well, they will learn the hard way like everyone else.........when it starts hurting in their wallet.

Funny thing is they think its OK and that PC gamers will love it. They obviously havent googled "UBISOFTS new DRM" and seen the public uproar about this and how peed off we are.

Another interesting note is when they do an update or server fix you will not be able to play their games till they are done  also here are a few questions UBISOFT was asked about the DRM and their answers

1.What happens if Ubisoft take the DRM servers offline for maintenance, or suffer a technical breakdown?
"In the case of a server failure their games will be taken offline, and you'll be unable to play them. "The idea is to avoid that point as much as possible, but we have been clear from the beginning that the game does need an internet connection for you to play. So if it goes down for real for a little while, then yeah, you can't play.

"

2.Do Ubisoft understand that we don't want to be permanently online?
They've spotted the outcry, yes. "We know that requiring a permanent online connection is not a happy point for a lot of PC gamers, but it is necessary for the system to work.

3.What's the problem this DRM is trying to address?
Ubi are increasingly concerned about piracy on the PC. "It's a huge problem - you know it, I know it, other people know it. It really is a very important issue that all serious companies need to address," says their spokesperson. But they also believe that their online services will make PC gaming better. "The real idea is that if you offer a game that is better when you buy it, then people will actually buy it. We wouldn't have built it if we thought that it was really going to piss off our customers." (Ya it will, pisses me off and I havent tried it yet  )

4.Which PC games will require an always on internet connection?
All announced Ubisoft PC games will include the online services, whether sold online, or from brick and mortar stores. That includes Splinter Cell, Silent Hunter 5, Assassin's Creed 2, Prince of Persia and the newly announced Ghost Recon. "It's hard for us to say, yes, from now until the day that we all die all of our games are going to include this," says their spokesperson, "but most will."
Well this really makes me angry

The sad thing is this will not stop piracy. I would like to bet anyone could d/l one of the new ubisoft games and be able to play the single player part. It will only hit ubisoft's sales figures, alienate it's customers and ultimately proove to be a very un-wise and potentially company destroying decission.

I don't know how software companies can beat the pirates but I do know that they should all pick a strategy and stick to it. Strange then that to my knowledge no other company has announced similar steps. Maybe they are holding off to see how ubisoft fairs. If it works then they may jump on the band wagon, if not, well one less rival to worry about.

I for one would still be prepared to suffer the need for an active internet connection but only if that was for on-line play, leave the single player experience alone.

I agree 100% nothing will stop games from being pirated, not on the PC or the consoles.Companys should realize this, we do. All they are doing is hurting and pissing off the legit buyers of their games. Forget the pirates chances are they wouldnt have bought the game anyway and cater to the people who bought their games and in return we will return to buy more of their games. doing this DRM will keep people from buying any of their games.Funny thing is they will still blame Piracy for the crappy sales of these games even though nobody wants it with this DRM. They cant see their own faults when games dont sell
1. Stupid DRM and copy protection (nobody needs this crap)
2. Stupid console ports that have graphics from 2006.(come on were at DX10 and 11 now not stuck in DX9 world)
3. Console Ports that are not optimized and are buggy as hell.
4. Future Lack of Dedicated server support (EA just shut down another 20 servers, some for games that are a year old. ie Mercenaries 2, Lord of the Rings Conquest. So if you just bought these games you will no longer be able to play multiplayer anymore)
5. No Mod support (im still playing Original counter strike with mods it a new game every month. Mods ensure the life and longevity of all games. condidering new games are usually only 4 to 6 hours long, their isnt any reason to buy a new game anymore. If you can mod a game then you can play it for years. got your $60.00 out of it now. if you cant mod a game why spend $60+ for a quick 5 hour romp youll never go back to
oh well I could go on and on about this. Truth is you will never stop pirates no matter what protection they use. even Steam games are cracked at launch. enough is enough let us play are games in fun and quit ruining it.

I agree as well. Nothing will stop pirates. They think by bring out new forms of DRM is going to stop them, but it isnt. All it is going to do is make it slightly more challenging for them to crack. And you know the funny thing, is most pirates that download those games and play them actually go and buy them after. Most pirates download those games to see how they are before they dump their $50+ into the game. A lot of the games dont have demos to play.

IMO, the best DRM protection now is from Microsoft, with the GFWL (Games For Windows Live) structure. I own quite a few of these games, and you can only use the CD key so many times before you have to call and get a new one from them. The game will not let you sign in or play w/saving your game unless you put in a key and sign into a XBL account. Honestly, this is even a hassle. I wish they would also change their DRM to at least register the game to an account, and never have to enter it again, somewhat like Steam. Steam also has pretty good DRM protection.

And I agree with you as well drenai2001, they need to STOP making DX9 games, and focus more on DX10 and DX11. Just because other users dont feel like upgrading their hardware doesnt mean that the rest of the users have to suffer and make less use of their hardware. I dont mind keeping support for DX9, but at least add the features of DX10 and DX11 for others. I mean even now, Assassin's Creed 2 is only going to be DX9. Now WTF is wrong with that picture? I mean come on......even the first Assassin's Creed had DX10. And also, these are the kind of things that seperate a PC from a Console. Better graphics, the use of a mouse and keyboard, far more features, etc. The way it is going, it feels as though they want to phase out PC gaming, and a LOT of people will be disappointed.

Sorry to rant a bit, but I guess I was holding it in too long. LOL. :D But really, they all need to change the way they are thinking in the gaming industry.

I agree with you, I like the idea of having some sort of serial number check but again GFWL is easilly bypassed by crackers as is Steam. Note to Companys DRM Doesnt work :o
As for DX 10 and 11 I would love to see more support for these. Sucks about DX 10 seeing as this was a gimmick of Microsofts to launch Vista and they seamed to forget about it and then they release Windows 7 (actually Vista with SP3  )and charge $400.00 for it. again add DX11 to impress people to upgrade only to find the lack of support again from Microsoft. Maybe when XBOX 720 :?: comes out we will finally see DX 10 support on games ported to the PC. I miss the days when games were made just for the PC and these games rocked. Now we get for the most part really bad ports with graphics from 4 years ago. We as PC gamers dont spend thousands of dollars to have crappy graphics, buggy performance, no mods and total lack of ingame Graphic options. I love to be able to max all settings at 1920 or 1680 depending on monitor and sit back and drool over the sweet eyecandy. not much to ask companys. I guess it comes down to money now and not quality. Console gamers will buy anygame no matter how crappy it is and pay for any type of download there is. even though if they bitch like us PC gamers they would get it for free. We PC gamers see through all this and know how bad a game is and then avoid it. Its not Piracy thats not selling PC games its actually bad games that us, legit consumers are avoiding to buy. Not paying $60.00 for a piece of poo. PC gamers are a tight breed that dont take crap and don`t like to be screwed over. :D
I also believe with all the sytems out there, exclusive games shouldnt be on just one system, it should be on all of them. as long as the PC version is made with the PC in mind and no port.

WOW I cant believe that some people think this DRM is fine and that we are a bunch of babies for whinning about it. What are they thinking. If this DRM works then other companys will adopt it and rumors have this might go to the Consoles to. Once its in there will be no way of getting rid of it.
read this link and listen to this guy who thinks were a bunch of whinners.
