I installed my old Samsung HDD that was previously in my XPS 630i into my new system. There are 26 GB in use and I can see 2 folders. That is all I see though. I can't access any of the files.

I've already messed with permissions and mucked around with some CMD line prompts to no avail. I don't think this is a permission problem as I have no problem accessing the Download folder, I just don't see anything inside.

It can't be this hard to swap HDDs from one computer to another...

as i have been told before, a hard drive must be "clean" before installing from 1 computer to another. upon install it can then be formatted for that computer. if you did not format it, i believe it will not work. seems to me there was a thread similar to your situation not too long ago.

What are you hoping to do with your old HDD? If it was an OS drive (and I assume it was), then that would explain why you're having some problems. OS installs are unique to every system and combination of hardware at the time they were installed.

This is a good topic for one of our gurus...like motormaggot noted, anytime you move a HDD from one system to another, you must start with a fresh install of Windows.

No, it wasn't an OS drive. It just had my downloads and various things on it and I just intend to keep downloaded things and Music/Pictures on it.

In that case, I'm not sure what the issue is...I can only imagine it might be corrupt somehow (bad blocks or CRC errors?) or possibly a file system type issue? Have you tried running Windows error-checking on it? (right-click on the drive, select "Properties" and then the "Tools" tab)

Umm... never mind. There was another folder there with a backup I apparently did in December. When I went to delete the 2 folders, I saw the backup at 23.3 GB and my downloads at 0 MB. I'm not sure what happened but I know I wouldn't have deleted my downloads I intended to keep just to transfer them back from my external at USB 2.0 speeds, ugh.

I feel quite foolish now and this thread can just be deleted.
