I'm still using my XPS 630i (I always loved this computer and it plays Diablo 3 just fine) but I ran into a problem that's bothering me. I had an extra flash drive laying around so I thought I'd use it for ReadyBoost. I formatted it, set it up (I'm in Win7), and it works perfectly. However - when I try to boot my computer with the flash drive connected it hangs halfway through the boot screen. This same thing happens when I try booting with an external hard drive connected. So I remove the flash drive, boot the computer, then plug it in once Windows has loaded and everything works fine.

My BIOS is updated to the most recent (1.0.13?) and I've disabled all other bootable disks aside from 'Hard Drive' in the BIOS. I've spent a lot of time Googling around trying to find an answer and there doesn't seem to be a definitive one.

Why does the computer lock up at boot when the drives are installed but they work fine once Windows is loaded?

Anyone have any ideas? I suppose it's about time to upgrade the innards of this beast but I'd rather not if I don't have to.

Thanks,
Kevin

I've had this happen to me also, don't really know why though. Mostly when using the front usb ports. I believe it was only one port though, and not both. Can't remember which, I just don't keep something plugged into them all the time.

I've also had this issue with a couple of new builds that had ASUS motherboards. (Another build with an MSI board doesn't do it.) I've also seen this issue pop up on a number of forums. Don't have a good solution, but evidently it's a fairly common problem.

Lucky for me, my 630i never froze up again after I upgraded to Windows 7.

Dang, I was hoping that there was some work around or fix for this. I've put Ubuntu 13.04 on a flash drive and it boots fine on my laptop. But my i630 won't boot at all from the front USB port. I guess I will try the other one and then try the back ports.

Nope, it only seemed to happen with the front ports if I remember correctly.
