I bought an OEM version of Windows 7 Pro 64bit from Ztech Software and what I got was a Dell Reinstallation DVD "For Distribution Only With a New Dell PC". Seems kinda iffy to me... Anyways I'm guessing this install binds to the motherboard, so if I plan on upgrading my mobo to a AsRock P67 I'm going to have issues... even if I use the same hard drive?

I would return it--you got ripped off; as you guessed, it won't work on your ASRock motherboard, since it requires a Dell SLIC table in the BIOS, which the ASRock UEFI obviously doesn't have.

You should have received a disc that looks something like this (below). IMO, you need to report this company to Microsoft (or at least your credit card company) for selling warez.

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

I have never even heard of Ztech software.

In any case, if you buy Windows, its supposed to come with a COA sticker and a product key.

FWIW (and you may already know this), but if ZTech gives you any trouble, then compile all the paperwork you can on what you were supposed to receive, etc. and call your credit card company (if you bought it with a credit card). They will nail ZTech and get your money back.

I speak from personal experience on this one; after getting ripped off by a company for more than $1,200--and waiting more than a year for a PC I paid for but was never even shipped--I finally got a full refund from my credit card company.

I bought this through Pricegrabber.com... Listed as "SoftwareDave", but was sent to me by ZTechsoftware. I send an email to them requesting a refund. I also called them, and they only do customer support via email and when I tried to get to sales I got some error also.

Here's is the link to his webpage for this software... says it comes with a COA.

UPDATE: Got a reply from ztech and he said it would 100% install on a new non-dell mobo. BUt he also said he'd gladly give me a refund.

Can they use Dell reinstall DVDs but have had purchased OEM CoA activation keys seperately?

Yeah. There is a Microsoft sticker on the back with a activation key. He did say I should wait until I get the new mobo to install it... saying it wouldn't be transferable from one mobo install to another.

And they are correct.

Maybe I'll keep it... not sure why it would come on a Dell reinstall disk though. Oh well...

The things I learn here! :) They're not the only ones selling them like this either:

http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Profess ... d_sbs_op_7

...saves a bit of money too ($80 as opposed to $100 if buying the official disc from MS).

That's pretty much what I got. Mine is the dark blue Dell Reinstallation DVD with a label exactly like the one listed in the link above (different key# of course). It was definitely peeled off of something else and put on this CD sleeve.

I don't know if it's legit or not. Maybe it is somehow since others are doing it too. Would Microsoft be able to authenticate the product key as a valid OEM key?

It's a good question--here's the official scoop from MS:

If you do not feel comfortable with it, just return it and get a refund and buy a copy from somewhere else.

Yeah. I'm sending it back. According to the info on the MS link, it still doesn't seem 100% legit.

Update: I called Microsoft and asked them if this product was a legit OEM copy. They told me yes that it is a legit OEM key for Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, but could not tell me if I needed a Dell PC (Dell SLIC in the BIOS) to install it.

I guess I'll send it back... I'm guessing Newegg sells Legit OEM software? $40 more though =/.

On a non-dell motherboard, you need the key to activate Windows. On a Dell motherboard, it is automatically activated from the DVD without needing a key.

And yes.....Newegg sells legit products.

Hmmm... Then it should install ok on a non-dell motherboard if the product key on the CoA is legit, like Microsoft said it was...?

Maybe it's worth the $40 saving to give it a try. There was a slip in the package from Z Tech that said if I had problems to contact them... maybe they would refund or make it right if I have an issue.
