Hey guys, I'm getting ready to order either a Studio 17 or a Studio XPS 16, and am just wondering if anyone has coupon codes, or any other "good deal" that could help me out before I place the order.

I actually havent found any coupons in a couple years bro. I have been looking for some too. I find a bunch for the regular base systems, but they all exclude the Alienware/Studio/Studio XPS series. Go figures.

PS - If you have any questions about the Studio XPS 16, let me know as I am typing from it. LOL.

Here are some:

However, they are probably not for the systems you are interested in . . . .

I see them pop up on techbargains.com a lot, but of course, when I'm actually ready to buy one, they're nowhere to be found. Thank you, davbow, for the link but those coupons are only for the regular Inspiron line. Good deals though.

m3thod,

Your XPS 16. How is the monitor size? I mean, does it feel closer to a 15" monitor or a 17" monitor?

I ask because I *really* want a 17" monitor, but I like the styling of the XPS 16.

I'm really torn between that and the Studio 17. I can actually get more for my money with the Studio 17 vs. the XPS 16.

Here's the two configurations, with prices. Which one would you guys choose:

Studio XPS 16 ($2,677):

i7-820QM
6GB 1333MHz ram
Single 500GB 7200rpm hdd
1920x1080 15.6" display
ATI 4670 1GB

Studio 17 ($2,557):

i7-820QM
6GB 1333MHz ram
Dual 500GB 7200rpm hdd's in RAID 0
1600x900 17.3" display
ATI 4650 1GB

All other specs that aren't listed are identical between the two machines, so it really comes down to which hdd, monitor, and graphics card combo do I want to go with. The XPS is smaller size, but better quality but the Studio 17 is bigger, not as good graphics, but also has RAID.

Hmmmm. HELP!

Actually, there's even one more option. If I step down to the i5-520M cpu, the Studio 17 becomes really tempting because you can get it with an ATI 5650 1GB graphics card, which is DX11. All other options would be the same as above, and it would be cheaper than the other two configurations. The only thing is, I'm not sure about a dual core cpu, when I can get a quad core. The i5 also uses 1066MHz memory vs. 1333MHz like the i7. How would the i5-520 compare to the i7-820?

By the way, the ONLY way you can get an ATI 5650 gpu is in the Studio 17 combined with the i5 cpu. They don't put that gpu in ANY other computer configuration. Not the XPS, or anything. Well, maybe the Alienware, but that's not an option.

Honestly, I would definitely go with the Studio XPS 16. It might feel like a 15 in screen if you have had experience with the M17x, but otherwise, the build quality and performance is amazing.

Out of your 2 picks, I would probably get the XPS 16, but instead of that 500GB HDD, maybe look into an SSD. It saves a lot of power when using the battery, not to mention the noise and heat.

The 1080P display is a LOT better than I thought. Everything is easily readable, and the crispness of the picture is not substitutable for words. Movies look astounding as well as games.

Also the speakers are AMAZING for a laptop!! I think its 5.1 audio. I feel a bass too. It almost sounds like a mini theatre. You wont be disappointed at all with sound.

The touchpad is awesome featuring multitouch support, and has "iPhone like" controls, like zooming, rotating, etc, using 2 fingers. The palmrest area and touchpad are all nice, but very magnetic to fingerprints!! I constantly clean it and wipe it off. LOL. Same goes for the LCD and the top cover of the notebook.

With my P8700 CPU and the HD 4670 1GB, I can play CODMW2 maxxed out, if you are wondering about performance. So your i7 should do much better.

The only negatives I have are the heat, and the battery life. There is a lot of heat coming from it, especially under the front areas beneath the palmrests and touchpad. And it is fairly warm. I only have the 56WHR battery, and it lasts about 1H 30M with full brightness and keyboard lights on. If I dim everything, I can get about 2H 30 mins.

Its a great media center type notebook. Great substitute for an Alienware laptop IMO.
