My 630i has been hanging on any software install that I do. I am running Mcafee AV and have even shut it down to see if it was any faster. The other day I was upgrading my COD WAW game with a 900mb patch and thought I would try it on my old XPS Gen2.. with XP.. It took 4 minutes to install on the old box.. it took a little over 12 minutes on the new 630i.

In the past.. when I bought a new machine from Dell, the very first thing I would do is format and do a clean install.. minus all the MS and Dell extras. I am to the point of doing it with this machine.. but I am also looking and doing this with Win7 instead of Vista.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Hi Beauxdru, and welcome to the forum!

Seeing as software hangs on installs, I would check your RAM for errors:

http://www.memtest.org/#downiso

It might also be a bad sector (or sectors) on your hard drive--well worth checking that too. If both of those things come back clear, then it might be worth reinstalling Win 7 if you're looking to go that direction anyway.

Ran the mem test.. no errors..
So I think I am going to give Win 7 clean install a try.

1. goto start >type CMD.exe right mouse click and run as Administrator
2. type CHKDSK /F
3. say yes and close the console
4. restart windows.
5. windows will fix the errors on HD Drive C:\\
this take a while 1-6 minutes.
if an error detect then windows restart automatic to fix the errors.

i hope this fix you problem. ;)

Would I have a HDD issue.. right out of the box like that? I don't take anything for granted at this point. :D

Just wanted to give an update on my situation.. I went ahead with the WIN 7 installation and I have to say that I am MUCH happier. The install went better than I could have hoped for and WIN 7 recognized pretty much everything on the install. It took me about 45 minutes from start to finish.

No more hangs when selecting applications.
Software installs run as they should. no HUGE delay there now.

Still getting to know WIN 7.. but it kept me from spending hours of time with tech support.

I have not installed any of the dell applications just yet. I am going to move forward with that this weekend.

Thanks to all that helped and your advice.
