Hi guys,

I just hope somebody out there is still reading these forums but here it goes anyway. I still have my XPS 630i that I bought back in 2008 and now it seems my graphics card is crapping out, so I decided to upgrade some components so I can still use it on some of my older games I haven't played yet that runs under Windows XP SP3, DirectX 9.0c.

I have no intention of buying a new PC yet nor moving out of Windows XP but here is the current profile of my box based on CPUID, CPU-Z and GPU-Z runs:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400@3.00GHz, 1333FSB
BIOS version 1.0.5
PCI-E 1.1 x16@x8 1.1
NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI SPP/MCP (North/Southbridge)
4Gb DDR2 PC2-6400 400MHz
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512Mb
Dell Monitor SP2208WFP
WDC WD50 500Gb 7200RPM
Stock PSU @750W

Besides upgrading from HDD to SSD,

1. what is the maximum CPU that I can upgrade to based on my chipset?

2. and the corresponding maximum GPU based on my PCI version so that there will be max performance with minimum "bottlenecking" with the CPU on #1?

3. Also please let me know if I can switch my memory from DDR2 to DDR3 based on my current specs.

4. Do I need to flash my BIOS too?

Thanks a lot in advance for your anticipated help.

Hello and welcome. It's been a while since I have had to do much to my 630i so here is my 2 cents worth.

As far as CPU's go, you can get a Core 2 Duo quad core, not sure which one, my 630i has a E8500 in it that was sufficient for what I was doing. If you can find one, I don't think it is worth the amount of money you would have to spend on a processor to upgrade. The E8400 is pretty good for what it was.

I did use a Nvidia GTX 660 Ti in it and it worked fine.

You can't use DDR3 memory.

Yes, flash the BIOS, I think version 1.0.13 is the latest and I believe it is here on the website located resources/driversandfirmware.html also flash the MIO firmware if you never did that.

My only other piece of advice to you is to upgrade to windows 7 if you can get a copy. At least it's still maintained by Microsoft and it worked pretty good on the 630i.

Hope this info helped some.

Kevin

For the CPU, I saw QX9650 was the max I can get into but it was expensive. I found some sites that suggests Xeons X5460/X5470 but it uses a different socket LGA771 so a mod adaptor socket is required. Does anybody know if the 630i chipset supports it?

For the GPU, I saw GTX 660ti has gotten more expensive so I choose 750ti FTW instead. The potential issue here is the bottlenecking but I can use the same card once I upgrade my mobo. Since the stock mobo PCI is ver 1.1, would 750 in PCI ver 3 be an issue?

Not sure what you consider expensive, but you can get the core 2 quads on ebay for less that 200. You'll probably have bottlenecking with any newer video card. Never heard of anyone using xeon's in the 630i so not sure there. You can do some searches on this site about some of the questions you are asking and I'm sure you'll be able to find out the info you need.
