I am thinking about a HTPC - maybe not the ultimate in performance, but the ultimate for performance and cost. What features? Case? Video hardware? Sound hardware? OS?

Anyone done it? Suggestions?

Never done it but it sounds interesting. I am a home theater buff but never found a reason to build one of these. With the networking options available these days everything I need to do is covered. What would you use yours for?

Well - a couple of things I guess -

I would like to have a central music/video player/server so that I could chunk my 100 disc CD player. Also the ability to watch home movies and view pictures.

Streaming audio is another interest - I know I could buy a dedicated device, for the audio, but those things can get really expensive.

Then there is the possibility of playing PC games on the big screen.

Also thought about adding a BR player - say one at Best Buy the other day for just over $100 bucks . . . I think the drawback to that is I am not sure there is good software to support a BR implementation on a HTPC.

If downloadable movies become high quality and easy - that might also be an option.

Dunno - I have been thinking a bit about it - maybe trying to put together a "part" HTPC and see how much I use it . . .

David
