New to the world of the 630I and recently snagged one from ebay at a steal. The seller had 22 of them and within 3 days, sold them all. Needless to say, got a great price.

So, how did I get the bug to all this? Started a couple of months ago when Max PC did an article on reviving older PC's. One of them was the XPS 630. I liked the look along with the lighting on the case.

After seeing the performance gains and the ability to now use non proprietary parts, I was hooked.

Anyhow, it's a Dell XPS 630I Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0 ghz Dual Core Processor.

-4 GB RAM

-320 GB Hard Drive

-Fresh Installation of Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit

Everything else is stock.

I also purchased a new Dell S2440L 24 in LED-LIT Monitor (1920x1080p) to compliment this computer along with the Bose Companion 5 audio setup.

Near term, I plan on upgrading to 8 GB DDR2 RAM replacing the current GPU with an after market, and replacing the PSU as I'm not sure how much more life is left in it.

Long term, Intel I-5 2500, Z68 mobo, 16GB DDR3 RAM, SSD and a RAID w / multiple HDD and go from there, maybe a case mod amongst other things.

Thank you in advance for your help and advice.

Welcome to the forum (and to the world of the 630i)! :) You can indeed find some great second-hand PC buys on eBay--I bought one a business was selling for less than $200 (Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz, 2GB of RAM, 320GB HDD, and Win 7 Pro 64-bit...and in excellent condition).

Your long-term upgrade path sounds good; just be warned that once you start upgrading, you can't stop!

It is so refreshing to see that the good old 630i is not yet dead! I was beginning to think that I am one of the very few people left in the world who think that the XPS630 is an iconic looking computer (even if all of the internal parts do need replacing).

Still have my stuff coming in. The 630 is BRAND NEW! Still had all the clear adhesive attached to the exterior of the case. Couldn't believe it. What was the original MSRP on these? My price? $140.00 (plus 25.00 shipping) The seller had 22 found in a warehouse and sold all 22 of them within a day.

Brand new Dell S2440L 24 IN screen LED-LIT Monitor 1920x1080p - $149.00 ($15.00 shipping) This seller had 10 new ones and all sold in less than 2 hours! These things are retailing for $250.00 on up.

Brand new Dell Bluetooth Multimedia Enhanced Keyboard and mouse combination ($20.00) These things (Used) are going for $35.00 plus. Came complete with the installation CD, palmrest and BT dongle.

Wiremate for external cable management $18.00 (Free shipping)

New mesh back and bottom office chair, still in the box. As comfortable, if not more so than a Herman Miller Aeron chair and only paid 55.00 off of craigslist for it. If you're not familiar with the Miller brand, these things retail minimum around $750.00 on up. I'll take the knock off any day for the $$$ saved.

Bose Companion 5 (6 mos old and not a blemish or scratch anywhere on it) for 185.00 (15.00 shipping)

Only thing I didn't scrimp on was the new firing position (Computer desk) paid $125.00 for it.

I feel like a kid at Christmas and I haven't even begun to upgrade yet.....

I spent a looooong time before I ever got a desk top PC. Got my first one in 2006. That was a Dell 510. It lasted all the way up until last year and finally gave up the ghost. Been using an older model Lenovo Laptop to get by until now. Most say the day of the PC is numbered. I have to agree with others who say for gaming, PS2's, XBox's and Nintendo's will never come close to a PC.

My laptop does a fine job for me out on the road when I'm traveling, but like I said earlier in my previous post, the bug has bitten me and there's no turning back now!

Mine has also been great. If it is a new one and you plan on using it for awhile, be sure to update the bios to the most current and also the MIO board firmware. Both of which can be found on the resource page on this site I believe.
