Hello all,

I'm looking for some advice on an issue I'm having with the NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT graphics cards. The first one that came with my 630i lasted a little over 4 years before it died. I purchased a replacement early last year and it too has died. I am wondering if there is an issue with the quality of these cards. Would anyone have a recommendation for a different card I could try that might be more reliable?

Thanks.

Jim

Welcome to the forum!

IIRC, 9800GTs are susceptible to a shorter-than-normal lifespan due to running so hot by default (my 8800GTs ran around 80-90 deg. C when playing Crysis); newer cards run significantly cooler, and use less energy to boot.

A suitable replacement depends on what you're willing to spend, but I would recommend either an EVGA GTX 560 Ti or an EVGA GTX 660. Either card will reward you with a significant performance increase over your 9800GTs both now and if/when you decide to swap motherboards for something newer.

As always, just be sure to check customer reviews for the specific model you choose (newegg.com is a great place for that). As a general rule, I try to stick with a 60% or higher customer five-star approval rating.
