Hey there,

I just replaced the Dell motherboard (for 630i) with the EVGA 780i. I did this because of the crippling of my GTX 280 that you have all heard about.

Vista did not play nice originally with the new board, so I had to go reinstall it. Now my question is two things:

1) Windows created a backup of everything in my hard drive in a folder called "Windows.old". Should I drag some games out of there to play, or just redownloaed them all (I use Steam) so that they play nice with my new setup?

2) The little white light that usually flickers when my hard drive is active no longer does so! You never know what you are missing until its gone, right? Well I miss that little indicator. Anyway does anyone know how to get it back?

Thanks! I'll let you know of any performance increase in games once this is all sorted out.

I can't answer your second question (not having replaced a motherboard before), but for the first question, there's a handy link for moving your Steam data/files:

Hmm thanks--I ended up downloading most of the games over anyway (I have a fast connection).

It's very unfortunate about those LEDS. Basically the POWER button is normal--but it no longer blinks to indicate when its asleep--and like previously mentioned, the HD Indicator LED is also blank. Normally I'd say one of the connections is mixed up but for the 630i there was only one connector for all the LED's (and if the Power LED is lit up, then this was done correctly--no?) Could it be that the previous Dell board had some proprietary component?

Oh well. I'm happy to report that graphics-intensive games DEFINTELY run a little smoother with this configuration rather than having the crippled GTX 280. I'd say 10 FPS more in Crysis/Far Cry 2 (with 8xAA on).

Great results indeed--especially considering you have 8x AA on! Even with dual 8800 GTs, I have to have AA switched off completely to get decent frame rates, and I don't have the highest visual settings on, either.

BTW, the benefit of copying some of the old Steam files is for any achievements you may have earned for say, TF2 or COD4, etc. or saved games you want transferred over.

No need to transfer any hard data for achievements to carry over--all of mine went through fine simply re downloading the games. Left 4 Dead even goes so far as to remember my last keyboard binding/graphical settings through the "steam cloud". Pretty cool, Steam is so useful sometimes. Of course, the tutorial mode started again in l4d..but thats fine.

Overall love the new mobo but really wish I knew why the lights are screwed. Lemme know if you ever come across any answers.

Not sure why your HD light and power button are not lit up anymore. I installed a 780i as well and both my power button and my hard disk lights work. The hard disk light doesn't blink nearly as bright as it used to though.

Weird.

Well, then I don't know what went wrong. It doesn't bother me too much (though sometimes I like to check to see if the HD is spinning or if comp. is freezing up) and certainly not enough to open up the case and mess around.

thaqza,

HDD LED has not light up at all? What is your 780i mobo brand name? EVGA? ASUS? GIGABYTE?

naya

click All Programs, click Accessories, and then click System Tools.
Click Disk Cleanup.
In the Disk Cleanup Options dialog box, click Files from all users on this computer.

Note If the User Account Control dialog box appears, type the administrator password, and then click OK. Otherwise, click Continue.
In the Disk Cleanup:Drive Selection dialog box, select the hard disk drive that you want to clean up, and then click OK. Wait while the system scans the computer for unnecessary files.
Click the Disk Cleanup tab, and then look for the Previous Windows installations check box.
If you find the Previous Windows installations check box, click to select it, and then click OK.

If you do not find this check box, go to step 7.
When you are prompted to confirm the removal of files, click Delete Files.
Wait while the system removes the files. You have now removed the Windows.old folder.

Sorry for the delay in responding, Naya. Haven't been to the site in awhile!

In regards to your question, I installed the EVGA version and yes, my HDD lights no longer work.

Hasn't really bothered me as much as I thought it would, though.
