I have recently received a DELL XPS 630i. When I try to do a clean install of XP (w/ Service Pack 2), it goes through the entire setup, reboots, and immediately returns a blue screen of death. It encourages me to run check disk. I cannot boot in safe mode either.

I have tried:
- Disabling RAID (I have 2 x 250GB SATA)
- Adding in the driver during the XP Setup for the nVidia Raid

I installed Vista and it seemed to work just fine. I'm encouraged to see a lot of people running XP Pro on their XPS 630i 's, but discouraged that I can't seem to get it installed on mine. I would appreciate any help or tips.

Thanks,
Dhondi

That does seem odd; do you have a CD/DVD of XP drivers for your 630i? I've wondered about this--it's not an issue when going to 64-bit, so I wouldn't think XP should be a problem.

Could anyone with XP straighten me out? :)

You need to download Dell's MediaShield drivers, and inject them into your setup cdrom

Dell nVidia MediaShield drivers

Use a program like nLite to add them to your setup cdrom.

I had an identical problem like yours, and Dell support told me I had to use Dell's own version of these drivers to make XP setup work.

I have the same problem and, GOD it annoys me. I hate this motherboard too btw...
And I have tried nLite but I cannot add that type of file that is in MediaShield. I think it has to be an .inf by nLite.

Thank you so much! I finally got XP to install thanks to you, in fact, I'm posting from it right now ;)

I am about to embark on putting XP into 630i. I have both XP Pro SP2 and Home Edition SP2. Is there anything that would preclude using Home Edition you think?

no, but why not Pro? Personally, I would just go with Windows 7.

For some reason I could not make a bootable CD from Nlite but I put in a floppy drive, loaded the floppy disk with those MediaShield files and voila am now succesfully installing XP Pro! So who needs Nlite? :)
