I helped a friend do a clean re-install of Windows XP Professional on her laptop. Since she did not get an XP Pro dvd with the laptop, we used a Microsoft Technet ISO of Win XP Professional; but the new install would not accept her Product Key (the one on the sticker on her laptop).

Anyone know why it wouldn't activate with what should be a valid key?

Hmm; is she sure the product key she has is for XP Pro? Also, IIRC, there's a file (ei.cfg) that may have to be deleted from the ISO before you can do an install like that (it's perfectly legal; I just don't have the web link here at home that talks about this in-depth). This is for Win7, so I'm not sure if it applies to WinXP?

Failing those, it's probably worthwhile just to give Microsoft a call and explain what's happening--someone posted here on my630i a direct phone number for a tech dept. at Microsoft that made the process a whole lot easier.

Absolutely her key (from the laptop sticker) is for XP Pro.

I figured I'd have to eventually call MS; just wanted to see if anyone had similar experiences since I don't understand why it would not be a valid key.

Thanks for the info. (If you find that link, I'd be interested.)

I found one of them (unfortunately, it's not the one with the direct phone number--I haven't been able to find that one):

I just stumbled onto the number (it was in my 630i to Extreme4 "how-to" docs)--it's: 1.800.936.5700

...whether or not it's still valid after all this time is another question, but it's worth a try.
