CWmike (from Slashdot) writes

Quote:
"More than one in every three new PCs is downgraded from Windows Vista to Windows XP, either at the factory or by the buyer, said performance and metrics researcher Devil Mountain Software, which operates a community-based testing network. 'The 35% is only an estimate, but it shows a trend within our own user base,' Craig Barth, the company's CTO, said. 'People are taking advantage of Vista's downgrade rights.' Last year, Devil Mountain benchmarked Vista and XP performance using other performance-testing tools and concluded that XP was much faster. Barth said things haven't changed since then. 'Everything I've seen clearly shows me that Vista is an OS that should never have left the barn.'"

Don't know, but I suspected it was the ability to downgrade and still have a valid Windows license.

At the end of June, Microsoft stopped making Windows XP (all versions) available to the public (Retail) and (OEM) manufacturers like Dell for new PCs as push to move everyone to Vista. Fortunately, Dell found a type of loophole in the licensing agreements. They still must sell Vista with all new computers, but optionally, you can choose the Vista "bonus" package which includes downgrade rights to Windows XP. I haven't seen one yet (we're a Dell reseller for business models) but supposidly when you boot the machine, you can choose Vista or XP. If you choose XP, you can upgrade to Vista at any time -- the license is included. It's $99 extra when you buy the computer and I don't think it's available anymore for most consumer (Home) models -- just the business lines.

I don't know how long that agreement is good for but there has been a lot of pressure against Microsoft to keep XP available. It's still available from System Integrators (generic PC makers) until the end of January and many have stocked up on the OEM version of XP. Who knows what'll happen after that.

Good to know. Thanks. 8-)

Windows 7 in 2010, then another couple years for the first service pack, my 630 will be 4 years old, then it will be about time for me to upgrade from XP.

I actually got the "bonus" package from Dell on my 630 with XP installed. It booted right up to XP, I didn't have to choose one or the other. I do have the Vista disk for the "upgrade" if I ever choose to do so. I just received my XPS on 8/29.

Awesome! Welcome to the forums.

As you probably guessed I'm a hard-core XP'er, especially when it comes to games. However I will concede that I got VHP on my new HP (emphasis HP) laptop.

I had the downgrade option too, it's not on the Dell's website, you have to call them. Not limitted to business models. You will get XP installed and the Vista dvd as well, so now i'm using a dual boot until ready to switch for real.
The XP installed was sp2 (that saved me the trouble of the hd controller driver in drive a:[could be usb floppy] during setup), installing sp3 was no problem.
