I'm going to be helping a friend do a clean reinstall of Windows XP on an old Dell computer (not an XPS). I was wondering if any of these "driver backup" programs are worth using (I doubt she's got the Dell driver disks)? If so, does anyone have experience with a good one that you'd recommend?

Or should I just take what's available on the Dell support site and go for it (as I used to do with my old computers)? :goodluck:

I've always just downloaded the most current drivers from Dell or whatever mobo/gpu manufacturer that I had. Seems to be the easiest way IMO and I really never heard of a driver backup software...I think it would be best to just start off with fresh drivers:)

Never heard of any such software.

Always redownload the latest from the Dell website or manufacturers website.

Okay, thanks for the feedback. That's what I've done in the past.

I've seen ads for some of these programs, and wondered if they worked. (They claim to make a backup of every driver that is on your system.) Of course, I've got nothing to lose in this case so maybe I'll try one just to see what happens!

(Here's some examples if you're curious:)

Just a thought on this--be sure you have at least SP2 on-hand (if not already part of the Win XP disc) when doing the reinstall; it will save some headache when it comes to running the Windows updates (I speak out of recent experience trying to reinstall XP with an original disc--sans any service packs). I'm always learning new things the hard way.

Absolutely! SP3 will be even better if I can find one.
Thanks.
