Hello Members,

Tried installing SP2 on Vista Home Premium 64, but I get the following message at the very end of Step 3: Service pack did not install, Reverting Changes, Do not turn off your computer. Frustrating part is it doesn't say why.

Wondering if anyone else encountered the same issue and how they overcame it. As of now it seems, I'll be stuck with SP1. Thanks!

George

Try some of the troubleshooting steps here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947366
You can also run sfc /scannow at a command promt to check your system files.

Thanks Kevin.

I already tried running the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [February 2011]. It installed fine, but when I attempted to install SP2 again, I got the same message.

I tried running sfc in the command prompt window but was told I must be an administrator running a console session. Under properties /users(me) all the permissions are checked in black but read & execute and read are checked in gray. Since I'm the only user, I thought I was already. How do I make myself an Administrator?

I'm downloading the standalone SP2 but that will take about 2 hours. I'm afraid I'll get the same results as I did through Windows Update.

Some people had success setting the Windows Modules Installer to Start and Automatic under Services. No luck here either.

George

So in the run box you should be able to type cmd to open up a command window. When you do, I think it should say Administrator at the top. Are you the only user account? Check in control panel/ user accounts and make sure your is set to administrator. If your not running as administrator, that is your problem. The service pack won't install.

Sorry for responding so late with an update.

Yes I am the only user account and I am set to administrator. I right clicked on cmd.exe and selected run as administrator and that worked. It stated some corrupt files were found but unable to fix. The CBS Log file is huge as you know. Scanning through it I saw errors pertaining to tcpmon.ini.

Tried running the stand alone installer and after step three was told the service pack did not install (as I figured it would). It did give me an error code that I googled but couldn't find any concrete solution for besides something on the Microsoft support forums that suggested to do a clean install. No thank you.

Seems like I'm stuck with SP1.

If you can back up your data, I would do a clean install, sounds like something has gotten corrupted. Support for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) ends on July 12, 2011. Which means, you won't get anymore security updates. Have you tried to let windows update install it? A stupid question, but are you trying to install the 64 bit version? If I was you, I would get Windows 7, much better. Sorry I can't be more help.

Kevin
