Hi all

I'm having huge problems trying to obtain a 64bit Vista Home Premium dvd from Dell here in the UK.

Working in IT and being fobbed off by Dell is becoming a joke.

Ive been told many things now including there are 2 versions of the Q9450 cpu one for 32bit and one for 64bit, my 630i system doesnt support 64bit and my motherboard is only 32bit.....arrrhhhhhhh. Trying to argue the facts with the tech support is just ridiculous as they just refuse to listen repeating the same sentence over and over again like a stuck record player hopeing you'll go away!!!!

Has anyone had any joy in obtaining a 64bit vista disc here in the UK? And if so could you please tell me your method....:)

I got mine by sending Dell-Chris_M a PM giving him my service number, he raised a incidence against it, I then contacted Dell support via the live chat and gave them the incident number, be persistant. I must admit once Chris_M lends a hand things usually get sorted. You can contact him on this site or if you have access to DCF do it there.

Hi Billy

I have sent Chris a pm 4 days ago as I think this is the way to get it sorted easily but I dont think hes been on here for a while now.

Will try and get onto the Dell comunity forum later on today to see if I can contact him there aswell.

Steve

Must admit I haven't seen Chris_M logged in of late, must be busy elsewhere.

You could go ahead and try the Dell support chat feature and see how far that gets you, also if you have CPUz you could check the "Instructions" section on the "CPU" tab. If you'r system is 64bit compatable it will show "EM64T" (see pic below of mine).

I had similar problem to you, see this posting here which discusses similar: http://www.my630i.com/cheapest-way-to-upgrade-from-32-bit-to-64-bit-t888.html

Here's a copy of what I posted there to get my mitts on 64-bit Vista:

I rang technical support and after having to hold for 40mins I finally got through to an Indian call centre who told me the exact same thing as you (ie - it wasn't available free).

This is a quote that a Dell rep posted on DCF when they decided to make 64bit available:
"If your system shipped from Dell with 32 bit Vista, you should now be able to call Tech Support and request a 64 bit DVD of the same Vista version. If you run into any trouble with the techs, just ask them to consult their policy document regarding o/s swaps".

Since I did run into trouble with the techs, I duly quoted this at them and after a short pause (presumably to consult their manager or the policy or whatever) I was told that yes I *could* get it after all and it came in post a few days later. So I'd suggest you try telling them that and see if it helps.

Ok

Tried the above and got fobbed off that after reading the dsn document this only applies to vista ultimate and business. arrggghhhhh

I am in touch with Chris Mixon on this and he has said that while there are examples in the document it applies to all 3 versions of vista so have esculated this via the dell support website via unresolved technical support contact.

They seem to me to look at ways to get out of things everytime I try and get something done????

There mentality is simple beyond me!!

A completely frustrated Steve.

You had Vista premium 32bit? and you have Vista Ultimate 64bit now?

Were you upgraded or did you buy Ultimate?

I got upgraded when I requested the 64bit version... I think they were out of 64 Vista Premium so they just sent Ultimate instead, don't think it was to make up for dicking me around for almost an hour on the phone anyways...

Huzzah! Here's to perseverance!

It's just disappointing to think of how many people in the same position would be dissuaded by inaccurate information and never know about it.

Good to hear you finally got your disc. :D

When I upgraded my system I was not asked for my key, I did however allready have Vista Ultimate 32bit installed though. I do seem to remember others posting they had the same situation as you and were also not asked for the key, but I'm not 100% sure, so the only thing I can say is try it and see.

I went from 32bit Premium to 64bit Ultimate with absolutely no hassle. It never even asked me for a license key or anything like that. Just installed and off I went

Did you ask for 64bit home premium from dell and get sent 64bit ultimate instead like me?
