As most of you know, this site was setup to address the issues discovered shortly after the XPS 630i was released.

Today, Dell does not even offer XPS desktops any longer and the 630i is becoming less and less of a mid range gaming system and more of a low range gaming system. As a result, many 630i users are upgrading or buying new systems.

However, we have a great community here that I want to continue. The question I have for all of you, is "How do we go about transforming my630i.com to a site that is not focused on the XPS 630i but rather focused on the community we have become?"

I don't have any current plans to change the site within the next 3-6 months - but I am interested in what direction we should go after that.

So . . . tell me what you think. If you don't want to post it publically, send me a private message or email me via webmaster at my630i dot com.

I want honest opinion and thoughts - the good and the bad . . .

Thanks again to everyone who has made this site the amazing resource that it is!

David

just focus on how dell hides the fact that they use low-grade components when manufacturing PCs: from power supplies, to motherboards, etc. This is not my first Dell. I've had similar issues, especially when trying to upgrade components, with past PCs from them. I guess I should've learned a lesson the first time. lol But yea, imo there's definitely a "market" for that kind of focus/path of the website.

Davbow, I think you have a great idea in mind. And I agree with you, that we do need some sort of a change.

What really happened here is, that we all pretty much started with our 630i's. We started to troubleshoot the system ourselves, come up with fixes that Dell could not, and we became an ever-growing community that helps one another everyday, whether it be for a 630i, or their own custom system.

Since a lot of users here have upgraded their PC's to a point that there is no trace of Dell on them, I think we should make the site more "everyone" friendly, than just for Dell 630i owners. What I mean by that, is if we change the website to show users that its a community based on Dell PCs, and custom built systems.

I think if we aim for a more broader approach on the website, making it aware to people that our community is not just based on Dell, or the 630i to be specific, I think a lot more people will join, and we will have a larger community.

Just my 2 cents.

Well said, m3thod, and I fully agree.

I still own Dell systems, just not the "XPS 630i". I have several Dell laptops, and another lower end Dell desktop.

I'd still like a specific forum or subforum dedicated to the Dell product, but I think we should start gearing our main discussion forums toward custom pc's, and all the components that go along with it, not forgetting about specific forums for water cooling, gpu's, overclocking, etc.

I agree on this as well. We should definitely include all the goodies.

Especially, because there are not many forums where users actually help people with the Dell Systems, because not many people either have good knowledge and experience with them, or that they just dont care for Dell. LOL.

This is all good input we have here.

I agree with all that was said above. It's not about the 630i anymore but the 630i owners still need a safe haven. It's about another pc, day after day...hey :!: just a little brainstorming fun to help keep your motor running in your head...meta-pc.com (not insisting this should be the name)...we are always going above & beyond what we originally have ;) and it can still be a home for the 630i owners :)

Definitely not me. I suck. LOL.

But we will need to come up with a real nice one. We should put some ideas together about this.

Would love to help out in that department but it really depends on the deadline. I'm pretty stuffed with some design projects I'm currently working on. Also, I have a couple of buddies that probably would not mind helping out. I'll talk to them later on and get back to you about this.

this is a good direction this site is taking. I for one, originally had 630i and found this site a safe haven to ask beginner's/basic questions without getting flamed on. Since the product has been discontinued we need to look at a broader range wherein more people can join in ESPECIALLY people that are new to PC's (modding, overclocking, basic troubleshooting).

You bring up a very good point. I also notice this on other forums, where a "noob" user will post a thread for the first time asking for help, and instead of getting help, they get people giving them cr@p because they dont know as much.

We here are above and better than that, and we have done a great job of making people feel welcome here, and not afraid to ask for help.

For a revision of the website, we can make a section for this topic in the forums too.

Good idea kupalupz!

For the longest, this site has been about learning, sharing, creating, and evolving with our pc's. I've never experienced a better site. If the title of this site does change, it should continue to reflect this atmosphere.

It's still a great place for technical advice & for keeping in contact with my fellow gamers. And I don't plan on upgrading anytime soon, so I'll be a 630i owner for awhile...Just don't run the place down, for god's sake. :-P

Very good points so far. I'd also like to request a Dell XPS notebook subforum since I have three XPS laptops, and am always looking for help with those as well.

So, maybe we can continue to cater to all forms of Dell XPS owners, not just the 630 and 730 desktops.

One point that has been mentioned that I think is probably the best one so far, is how this site is a very welcome and comfortable place for beginners. There's a lot of expert sites where a beginner can feel extremely overwhelmed and intimidated, we need to make sure to be the bridge between the "off the shelf" user and the "expert" user.

I say this from experience because up until 8 months ago, I never would have even considered a motherboard swap, and now I'm comfortable building full custom water cooled gaming rigs with my eyes closed, and I owe it all to the guys from this site who taught me and pointed me in the right direction.

Lets see..
1. Darn good group of people
2. No flaming "noobs" because they ask a question that has been posted on 10 times before and yet they get a reply with suggestions on what needs to be done (ohh and i dislike the word "noob", I prefer the word "greenhorn")
3. I myself came to this site after I bought the 630i and after that I basicly built a entire new pc replacing componets. +$2000 going into the same dell case

I would agree with some of the others maybe keep the old forums that are related to the 630i. Alot of good info in there!! Put the resource collective, fan light, software, upgrades and other sections under a seperate XPS 630i section so its all available and open up some new catagories thats open to all computers- upgrades, mods, hardware issues, software issue's, overclocking and ect.

Why change the domain name?? Keep it short. New people will figure it out after browsing the older posts.. if not, they will ask a question and we will answer..

i agree with m3th0d1c4l 100% , i have to say that when i got my 630i first all i knew was how to turn it on and how to install a game but from coming to this forum and with the help of the people on this site i have learned so much. i still regard myself as a noob but my understanding of how things work and what i'm doing is a lot better, so much so that i am starting my new build soon for the first time. and will keep you posted on how i'm getting on with that, as i wouldnt of had the bottle to do it a year ago without the members of this site.

As far as how the site should move on i think keeping dell specific threads would be so good for this site as well as having a custom build section, i was only thinking the other day of how this site would pan out with the 630i discontinued , maybe have an alienware thread as well i think read somewhere that one or 2 of the members are getting the alienware setup. i can see the 630i part of the forum fizzle away in the not to distant future as most are not really dell setups anymore so i think a name change should be on the cards but not straight away. i'd love to help out with the logo but i couldnt draw a matchstick man :D

i was only thinking the other day of how this site would pan out with the 630i discontinued , maybe have an alienware thread as well i think read somewhere that one or 2 of the members are getting the alienware setup.

An Alienware section would be a nice add-on.

I just hope I dont have any problems with mine so hopefully I wont be posting for help in there. LOL :D

But, yes I agree that we should definitely keep the Dell section, and add a custom build section. And I am sure now that the XPS line is discontinued, people will start buying Alienware's, and will eventually need help with upgrades, OC'ing, mods, and troubleshooting.

I also like the idea that JDookie posted. We should have a nice Laptop section too. I as well have a couple Dell notebooks, which tend to have problems. LOL.

A custom build & Alienware section would be awesome. We should pride ourselves as the unofficial Dell Support forum
